Damon Runyon identifies today’s most brilliant early career scientists and funds their innovative cancer research.

Phillip G. Febbo, MD
Dr. Febbo’s [Damon Runyon-Lilly Clinical Investigator] research focuses on applying genomic technologies to better understanding the biology and clinical behavior of prostate cancer. His work has demonstrated that the expression of 5 genes can be used to predict the recurrence of prostate cancer following surgery. This finding indicates that DNA microarrays (or DNA chips) can sensitively and broadly detect variation in genetic expression and thereby monitor cellular biology. Dr. Febbo is currently testing the model in the setting of a national, prospective trial through a cooperative cancer group and working to adapt this and similar models for clinical application.
